The Guide Dog Foundation and America’s VetDogs have a unique employment opportunity for a Canine Care Supervisor at our campus in Smithtown, NY. Our organizations are distinctive in the assistance dog industry providing both guide and multiple types of service dogs. 

OVERALL SUMMARY
Oversees daily operations of kennel facilities, including staff scheduling and delegation of tasks.  Interviews and evaluates potential Canine Care Associate applicants.  Oversees training and evaluation of new employees, and provides ongoing coaching and education to help Canine Care staff realize their full professional potential.   Ensures the health and welfare of the dogs in our program by following procedures approved by the Chief Canine Care Officer and Foundation staff veterinarians.  Communicates effectively with multiple departments to support the production of healthy guide dog teams.  Performs the duties of Canine Care Associate and Advanced Canine Care Associate as needed to ensure proper daily care of on-campus dogs.

ESSENTIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
1) At least two years college coursework in animal health, biological sciences, or equivalent life experience strongly preferred.
2) Prior supervisory experience preferred.
3) Ability to communicate via email and telephone.
4) Proficient computer skills (word processing, email, database use) strongly preferred
5) Strong interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communications with staff members and volunteers at all levels in the organization.
6) Ability to thrive in fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
7) Ability to work weekends and/or evenings when required.

Physical Demands:
Ability to restrain active dogs weighing up to 110 lbs. for up to one hour.
Employee is required to: stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead and bend to the floor.
Exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert 1 to 20 pounds of force frequently.

Visual Acuity:
Near acuity and accommodation is required for ability to see and read dog's reaction to environment, distractions, or to determine if dog is under stress; ability to read forms, documentation and computer screen.

Hearing Ability:
Ability to interact with dogs, employees, students, volunteers in an informal way or giving formal instructions.

Working Conditions: 
The employee is subject to daily outside elements, traffic, airport noise levels as well as inside kennel noise.
Employee is exposed to cleaning and antibacterial solutions in kennel. 
Employee is also exposed to animal dander and hair in confined areas such as vans and kennels.
