Campus: The campus will be fully landscaped for a college-like atmosphere. The exterior design theme will flow from one building to the next for a warm and inviting environment. Among the points of interest will be the newly designed Nature Walk, with park benches and a patio, where students can go for a breath of fresh air; simulated city streets, intersections, and roadblocks for training exercises; and an authentic Japanese garden, a place for quiet reflection. A new gazebo, with tactile maps for the blind and a sitting area, is being constructed for the center of the campus to recognize the donor who makes a gift to name the campus.
Breeding and Development Complex: Puppies will come into the world here, under the loving care and attention of our around-the-clock staff. Closed-circuit television will allow the staff to monitor the newborns from any room in the building. The young ones will start their life in the puppy nursery and will romp in the puppy playground until they are old enough to live with volunteer Puppy Walker families. The complex will provide temporary housing for the puppies awaiting Puppy Walker homes, as well as our breeding stock while they are in season. There will be a veterinary examining room for dogs under our doctors care; a grooming room; and boarding facilities for older puppies if their families are out of town. In addition, renovations are planned for our existing kennels as well as the office space for the breeding manager, kennel managers, veterinary staff, puppy department, and others.
National Administrative Center: The visitor welcome center and reception lobby will be the first stop for guests of the Foundation. No one passing through will be able to resist a few minutes at the television monitors in the lobby, which will show the activity in the puppy nursery and around the campus. This building will house the executive and administrative offices, conference rooms and computer center. Plus, there will be a gift shop where visitors can purchase Guide Dog Foundation merchandise.
Student Residence Hall: To make the students stay as comfortable as possible, the current residence building is being renovated and expanded. The capacity will increase from 6 double rooms with shared baths to 17 single rooms with private baths. An infirmary will be housed here, should a student have a medical emergency while on campus. A relieving station will be located just outside of the residence hall, where students can bring their dogs on leash. Also in the construction plans are a new training room and office space for the student services staff and trainers while class is in session.
Training Center: The Foundation is acquiring and converting an existing building into a state-of-the-art indoor training center. The highlight will be the 88 kennels that feature all-enclosed runs for the dogs in training. A veterinary examining room will be located on this site, should a dog need medical care. The center also will have its own feeding and food prep area to handle the more than 850 pounds of dog food that we expect to use here each week. In addition, there will be a grooming room and office and work space for the training and maintenance staffs. A group training hall will host gatherings of Foundation volunteers and dogs.
