Reader’s Digest Magazine Names Guide Dog Foundation, “Best Charitiy”

The volunteers and staff at the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, Inc. are proud indeed. Reader’s Digest magazine named the Guide Dog Foundation “The Best Charity” in the category of organizations serving people with disabilities. This Reader’s Digest list acknowledges the most highly regarded, well run, and trustworthy charities in the nation.

“It is an honor to be recognized as one of the nation’s best charities,” said Wells B. Jones, CEO. He added, “We are grateful to the many generous donors who make our program possible. This acknowledgment reinforces what our supporters already know, that they are giving to a trustworthy organization.”

Since 1946, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind has provided guide dogs free of charge to people who are blind and are seeking enhanced mobility and independence. This 25-day training program includes transportation to and from the school, room and board, and aftercare services. Students come from all over the United States, and foreign countries as well. Our trademark small classes and individualized instruction often attract students who may have special requirements. The Foundation has successfully educated hearing-impaired people who are blind, as well as those who are physically challenged, to handle their skilled guide dogs.

The cost to complete the training of one guide dog is more than $30,000. This includes all expenses from breeding and raising the dog to training and matching it with a student. The Guide Dog Foundation is supported by donations from generous individuals, corporations and foundations, businesses, and service/fraternal clubs. The Foundation is proud of its reputation as a charitable organization and consistently receives high marks from charitable watchdog organizations, such as the American Institute of Philanthropy. Additional independent financial information about the Foundation, including recent IRS 990 forms, can be found at www.guidestar.org.
